This Johnny Cash version of Hurt (originally 9 Inch Nails) came on the Ipod when we were driving today. silenceleigh stated that you could make a good Doctor Who fan vid out of it. I agreed, and said I'm sure someone already had. Low and Behold... they did, and I like it. There were more, and a Torchwood one as well, but one is enough for here. "Doctor Who Hurt fan vid" sounds like strange headline.
While waiting with Cherie to get her iPhone 3G, I struck up conversation with the people around us in line.
The person in front of us was trading up from a five year old Palm OS powered Samsung i500.
"I love Palm OS, I've just gotten tired of waiting for something better than this..."
The i500 was a PalmOS 4.1 powered small and stylish clamshell. There has not been a smartphone like it on the market since.
Samsung had an amazing followup device that ran Palm OS 5.0 in a similar clamshell form factor, but they never shipped it. And for the customers who were drawn to this style of device, the the Treo line have been a poor and clunky substitute.
"When is Palm ever going to do anything new?"
The person in front of us waiting for an iPhone 3G was also a long time Palm OS user. He had upgraded to a Treo 680, but he was not happy with it.
"I'm a pharmacist and I need my Palm OS medical applications. I guess for now I will have to buy a Palm PDA, and I will carry around two devices until there are versions of those apps for the iPhone. I've given up hope of Palm coming out with anything new..."
It boggles my mind how much momentum and mindshare Palm has squandered over the past several years. While Palm's been polishing up the same ancient operating system and device form factors, the installed base of fans have been giving up and moving on in droves.
I wonder how many tens or even hundreds of thousands of Palm OS devices around the world are being replaced this week, stuffed into drawers to be forgotten?
serolynne has been drinking the Apple koolaid from a fire hose lately.
First, her new MacBook Pro arrived on Thursday...
It looks like she is in love... I don't think I've ever seen her hug her old Dell....
And today, we lined up before opening at the St. Louis Galleria Apple store to get her an iPhone 3G...
Even though the iPhone 3G has been on sale for over a week, masses of people were still lined up at the St. Louis Apple Store when it opened this morning.
We got there at 9:20 AM, and there were close to 70 people in front of us in line. Despite Apple's web site indicating that only black 16GB iPhone's would be in stock, the store actually only had 8GB models. After waiting over two hours, we got our ticket guaranteeing us one. Those just a few further back in line were told to try again another day.
We stood in line for 3 hours this morning.. but I finally got my iPhone! I was only able to score a 8GB model, but it's mine and that chore is done. And finally.. finally.. I'm back to the land of having a mobile device who's primary purpose is not just to make phone calls. (And yes, my phone number is the same.)
On a side note, AT&T is quite un-nomad friendly. They were not able to set Chris and I up on a family plan. Something about activating in St. Louis, with a San Jose primary area code, with a porting of a Florida area code number with a billing zip code in South Dakota. I mean really, how complex is that? (*laugh*) We'll likely hit a AT&T store at some point and try to make that happen.
Happy birthday ragingamazon! I wish the Right Coast and the Wrong Coast (except it’s where you are, so it can’t be too wrong) could get together and throw you one awesome party.
When we got back from our 7 month adventure last year and were going through the gigabytes of photos we took, something really stood out to me. It wasn't the photos that were there, but rather the photos that were missing. If one looks just at our photos, you'd get the impression that we just traveled from amazing scenic view and landmark to the next. And true enough, that alone would be quite the adventure worthwhile hitting the road for.
But that only tells part of the story.
We're frequently asked what drives us to choose our destinations and stop over points. And despite what our photo album might elude to - it's not always the landmarks we want to see. Those actually tend to be the places we stop inbetween on the journey that really inspires us. And that's the journey of spending time with amazing people. And when you're consumed with quality time, it's sometimes difficult to remember to take out the camera to capture a piece of the experience.
From both of us having a wide network of friends and people we consider family prior to us meeting, we already had lots of potential stops. And in the midst of traveling together and strengthening our own relationship, we continue to add to that list. These are people, who in one form or another, have given us an invitation to stop on in when we're in the area. They offer a sort of home base for us - a place for a hot shower, wifi, parking and perhaps catching up on laundry. And these are truly invaluable resources. Instead of couchsurfing, it's more like driveway-surfing.
But even more so, they offer us a sense of community. A sense of belonging and an opportunity to contribute to their own household and family. Whether it be from sharing stories of the road for a taste of vicarious adventure, or helping out on projects - it's definitely a win-win situation for all of us.
So, one definite contributor to our routing is the people.
And this adventure, I will do a better job of capturing that aspect of our story.
What a good night. Left the dance floor at one. Could have stayed later but the crowd was thinning out and I felt so, so good; it was time to leave happy.
Thomas feels he should have called in "dead" today.

Most of my day is going to be spent staring at spreadsheets and moving data from various databases onto them. I expect total sanity loss by about 11am. Fortunately I have very little in the way of item cards or clue tokens to lose today on my way to Arkham Asylum.
I'd much rather be at home, still asleep with a warm and wonderful gal at my side. Coffee is doing little to help, and I'll be here til 8 tonight. Nothing bodes well about this day, except the pizza lunch for my birthday that's happening at noon.
A FedEx delivery truck showed up yesterday morning upon our arrival in the St. Louis area with my new MacBook Pro. So far, I'm in technolust. It's a beautiful machine and feels so sweet and sexy. I'm still adjusting to thinking a bit differently about my computing environment, but I feel that that things will soon become intuitive to me.
So.. now to sell my 'old' Dell Latitude D820. I'll likely be putting it up on St. Louis Craigslist in the coming days after I get everything off of it, and see if I can't get it sold before we depart the midwest. However, I'll offer it one last time here in case anyone would like to purchase it. I should be able to ship it next week. Reasonable offers considered :)
Also, since I used the Education Store to buy my Apple, it came with an iPod Touch 8GB. I've currently got it up on eBay, but if anyone would like a deal on a brand new one, let me know :)
